Water central to global peace, development, UN deputy chief tells London summit
6 November 2014 – The most basic of all human rights – water – is also a central element in global affairs and the development agenda with wide implications on international peace and security, the Deputy Secretary-General told participants today the World Water Summit held in London.
“Around today’s world, we see how a lack of access to water can fuel conflict and even threaten peace and stability,” Jan Eliasson pointed out as he delivered the keynote address on “Tackling the Global Water Challenges: What’s Next?,” to the Summit, which was organized by The Economist.
World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development opens next week in Japan
UNESCO’s Director-General, the Crown Prince of Japan and Princess Lalla Hasna of Morocco - the President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment - will open the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan next Monday, 10 November.
The Conference will mark the end of the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014) will create a Roadmap to launch the Global Action Programme (GAP), a follow-up to the Decade that will propose new goals and objectives, priority action areas and strategies.
‘Leaders must act,’ urges Ban, as new UN report warns climate change may soon be ‘irreversible’
Citing “clear and growing” human influence on the climate system, a United Nations report issued today has warned that if left unchecked, climate change will increase the likelihood of severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts for people and ecosystems.
Echoing that dire warning, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that if the world maintains its “business as usual” attitude about climate change, the opportunity to keep temperature rise below the internationally target of 2 degrees Celsius, “will slip away within the next decade.”
The 8th Session of UNESC/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme 2014 successfully completed
On October 31, 2014 the 8th Session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme 2014 for specialists from developing countries and countries in transition was ended by graduation ceremony of awarding certificates.
The Ceremony was attended by Mr. Vladimir Berdin, Deputy Executive Director of the International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, Mr.Valery Zykov, Deputy Dean of the Ecological Faculty of the Russian Peoples' Friendship University (PFUR), Dr. Margarita Redina, Head teacher of the education programme, Mr. Alexander Antonov, Head of Educational Programmes Sector at ISEDC, and experts and teachers of the course.
ISEDC Brings Together Young Professionals from 18 Countries
On 27th of October 2014 a scientific and educational seminar took place at the International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO (ISEDC), in the framework of the 8th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme "Sustainable Energy for All".
