bokova_domingoThe Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, will appoint world-famous tenor and conductor Placido Domingo as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador on 21 November.

The ceremony at the Organization’s Headquarters (7.30 pm) will be followed by a fundraising gala for the Education for All Programme.

Placido Domingo’s appointment comes in recognition for his “exceptional artistic career, his inestimable support for young opera musicians through the Operalia competition, and his dedication to the values and ideals of UNESCO.”
On the same evening, Placido Domingo will present winners of his Operalia competition and musicians involved in his development programme at the Washington Opera. Sopranos Micaëla Oeste and Angel Blue will perform jazz, Broadway and opera favourites with pianist Timothy End. UNESCO Artist for Peace Ino Mirkovic, violin, and Ksenia Kogan; piano, will also perform on this occasion.
Proceeds from a charity dinner held at UNESCO on the same evening will go to UNESCO’s Education for All Programme and the newly launched Placido Domingo Festival (Seville, Spain) of which UNESCO is an official partner. The public is also invited to make donations to the programme and festival.
UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors are an outstanding group of personalities who have generously agreed to use their talent and status to help focus the world's attention on the work of the Organization in education, science, culture and communication.
