global energy 2020 oonOn February 17, the first series of meetings took place between the Global Energy Association and representatives of the UN agencies in Russia. In anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the end of the World War II and, accordingly, the creation of the UN, the parties have discussed the potential for further cooperation in terms of the development of sustainable energy.

"We consider the Global Energy Association a promising partner"’ said Vladimir Kuznetsov, director of the UN Information Center in Moscow. He described the main goals, principles and structure of the work of the United Nations, focusing on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. "The particularity of the sustainable development agenda until 2030 is that it represents a new philosophy, which is addressed to both developed and developing countries. The implementation of the UN SDGs contemplates the inclusiveness and involvement of all national governments, businesses and the general public. The UN even issued a special guidance about saving the world for lazy people to show that anyone can move closer to achieving the SDGs", said Vladimir Kuznetsov.

President of the Global Energy Association Sergey Brilev emphasised the importance of collaborating on the exchange of knowledge and expertise and added that the Association interested in participating in the UN Climate Change Conference in 2020 and delegating representatives of the International Award Committee and the Global Energy Prize laureates. Sergey Brilev also pointed out that the Global Energy Association interested in media partnership with the UN information resources, namely, with the UN Web TV and the UN News.

When talking about the goals and systems of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Ivan Seregin, national consultant of the UNIDO Center for International Industrial Cooperation in Russia emphasised their organisation provides technical assistance to countries in terms of technology transfer and accumulation of experience. This work, in particular, involves increasing of the energy efficiency in production, for example, through the introduction of an energy management system. The expert also added that UNIDO is interested in promoting its initiatives together with the Global Energy Association and asked to look into the agenda and programme of the Vienna Energy Forum (June 21-23).

Vladimir Moshkalo, the head of the representative office of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Russia talked about the upcoming World Environment Day, which will be held in Bogota (Colombia) on June 5th. Sergey Brilev, in turn, noted that the Association is interested in this event taking into consideration that the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee includes members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Rae Kwon Chung (South Korea) and Rodney John Allam, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Following the results of the meeting, the parties decided to conclude an agreement on cooperation between organisations, which will be signed within the framework of SPIEF 2020. The Global Energy Association will pursue to get consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and associate membership in the UN Department of Global Communications. The issue of information partnership and providing of expertise by the speakers of the Global Energy Association at the request of UN entities will also be separately considered.
