earth dayPeople across the world are being urged to speak out on behalf of Mother Earth so that she can continue to care for life as she has done for more than one thousand of years.

The appeal comes from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message for International Mother Earth Day observed on 22 April each year.

The Secretary-General said as the population grows, it is important to recognize that mankind's consumption of the planet's resources is "unsustainable."
He called for what he described as "a global transformation of attitude and practice" adding that "it is especially urgent to address how we generate the energy that drives our progress."
This year Earth Day is focusing on green cities and mobilizing a million people to create a sustainable, healthy environment by greening communities worldwide.
According to UN Habitat, the UN agency dealing human settlements, more than half of the world's population of over seven billion people now live in cities and towns.
