bokova2"2011 was a year of challenges for UNESCO and for the whole world" - said the Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs. Irina Bokova in her messages at the end of the year.

Arabian spring showed the transformative power of desire for dignity and democracy. UNESCO quickly mobilized its resources in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya and is intensifying its efforts in 2012 to support education reforms, to promote a culture and support mass-media organizations as a framework for new societies.

Throughout the world young men and women express their displeasure and call for peace, freedom of expression and social justice. "All transformations of this kind take time and effort. There is no guarantee of success. The international community must be mobilized to a greater extent, and UNESCO is ready to play its role," - stressed the Director-General.
2012 is also the year of Rio 20 - United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. UNESCO seeks to highlight the transformative power of education, science, culture and the media in sustainable development.
Cessation of payment the contribution from the United States to UNESCO, after the adoption of the decision to admit Palestine to UNESCO by Member States, has put the Organization into serious financial situation. "It requires our commitment to update, it provides a golden opportunity to accelerate our efforts to reform the Organization. UNESCO has everything you need in order to demonstrate their differences and overcome these difficulties, "- said Mrs. Bokova in conclusion.
