The road to 2030 to take shape at UNESCO’s General Conference
The 38th session of UNESCO’s General Conference opened today with an eye on the future.
The biennial meeting of the governing body will set the path for UNESCO as it reviews programme and policy plans aimed at achieving the 2015-2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted in New York in September.
World Science Forum in Budapest, Hungary, to highlight the enabling power of science
Hungary will host this year’s World Science Forum, from 4 to 7 November. The Forum has been held every other year since 2003 serving as a platform for exchange between the scientific community and society. The theme of this year event will be “the enabling power of science.”
The World Science Forum will be the first major international science event since the recent adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of new Sustainable Development Goals for 2015-20130.
Outcomes of the 3rd week of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme
During the third week (October 19-23) of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme the fellows visited experimental laboratories of the leading Russian research and scientific institutions and participated in educational seminars and online conferences.
On October 19, fellows participated in a scientific seminar held by the Joint Institute for High Temperatures (JIHT) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The results of the 2nd week of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme
During the second week (October 12-16) of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme the fellows visited various lectures and seminars, participated in professional discussions with lecturers and students of the Ecological Faculty of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
The curriculum agenda was devoted to the problems of modern society, in particular to the topical issues, such as “Global climate change”, “Low-carbon development”, “Energy poverty” and “Environmental safety”.
ISEDC focuses attention on effective use of energy resources in the framework of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme
On October 6, 2015 the IX session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme for specialists from developing countries and countries in transition officially started up at the premises of Ecological Faculty of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).
The programme will be held from 5th to 30th October 2015. This year 19 young specialists from all over the world participate in the IX session, including fellows from Belarus, Brazil, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, Kirghizstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Zimbabwe.
UNESCO at the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly and the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda
From 22 to 30 September, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is in New York to take part in a number of high-level events within the framework of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
She will join Heads of State, Government leaders, UN High Level Representatives and civil society for the historic adoption of new Sustainable Development Goals, from 25 to 27 September.
Countries urged to submit climate action plans ahead of UN conference in Paris
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is eager to get countries to submit as soon as possible their action plans that will form the basis of the new universal climate change agreement to be adopted in December in Paris, a senior United Nations official dealing with the issue said today.
Janos Pasztor, Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change, told a press conference at United Nations Headquarters that, to date, 62 out of 194 parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have submitted their Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC).
Opening 70th UN General Assembly, President underscores urgent need for action
A major priority for the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly is to ensure that all actors move swiftly to deliver on the promises being made for sustainable development, the President of the 193-member body said today.
“In less than 10 days’ time, our leaders will gather in this hall to adopt the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Mogens Lykketoft said as he opened the session.
